Juan Pablo Montoya took the 1998 F3000 title following a season long battle with Nick Heidfeld. Moving up to F3000, Nicolas Minassian teamed up with Heidfeld at the West Competition team.
With some 32 entries in the series and with less than two seconds covering the entire grid, competition was intense all season. Round four of the championship at Silverstone was where Minassian secured his first top ten result of the season with seventh place, swiftly followed by two more at Monaco and Pau. This top ten run culminated in his first points-paying position of the season at the Austrian A1 Ring circuit with fifth position, followed up by a fine fourth place at Hungaroring.
It was a learning season for the Frenchman and come the end of the season, five points were on the board.
